FORGING FUTURES: USM-UNIVERSITY OF ANBAR EMBARK ON PIONEERING ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH COLLABORATION

USM PENANG, 14 February 2024 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today has forged a significant partnership with the University of Anbar, Iraq, marking the commencement of a promising academic and research collaboration, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MoU signed between the two institutions outlined the expansion of academic relations in various key areas namely:

  1. exchange of research materials, publications and information;
  2. development and operation of joint academic programmes;
  3. organisation of joint research programmes;
  4. provision of undergraduate projects;
  5. exchange of students and academic staff; and
  6. the development of common curricula in areas of mutual interest.

Signing on behalf of USM was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation representing the USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Habibah A. Wahab, while on behalf of University of Anbar, Iraq was the President, Professor Dr. Mushtak Talib Salih.

In her welcoming speech, Habibah highlighted USM's recent achievement in sustainability, where the university secured the 4th position globally, 1st in Asia, and 1st in Malaysia in the Times Higher Education (THE-IR) 2023 global sustainability rankings.

The recent Times Higher Education (THE-IR) 2023 global sustainability rankings, which measure the contributions made by an institution and its community in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is set by the United Nations to be fully realised by 2030.

“The MoU between our universities has been instrumental in fostering collaboration and advancing academic and research endeavours. Today, as we embark on this journey to renew our partnership, we reaffirm our commitment to excellence in education, research, and mutual cooperation.

“As we move forward, let us embrace this opportunity to further strengthen our bond and explore new avenues for collaboration. Together, we have the power to inspire, innovate, and make a lasting impact on the academic landscape,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mushtak presented on the achievements and facilities of the University of Anbar.

He expressed the anticipation that the MoU would open numerous opportunities for both institutions, emphasising the pride of the University of Anbar in collaborating with USM and the mutual benefits that both parties can derive from this partnership.

Also present were the International Strategic Coordinator, Division of Academic and International representing the USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic and International, Professor Dr. Hazizan Md. Akil; Head of Scholarships Division, University of Anbar, Dr. Faisal Ghazi Hammood Al-Sharqi; and principal officers from both institutions.
