PENANG, 14 June 2019 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), the nation’s second oldest university, is gearing up for its 50th anniversary celebrations this year.

Professor Dato’ Dr. Adnan Hussein, who chairs the celebration committee, highlighted this when interviewed by BERNAMA News Channel recently.

Established in 1969, USM has seen tremendous growth in various aspects.

He mentioned that, apart from the Main Campus on Penang Island, USM now has the Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal on mainland Penang and the Health Campus in Kelantan. Another campus is also run collaboratively with the KLE group, the USM-KLE Medical Campus in India.

“The student population has also grown throughout the years, he further said. From the first intake of 57 students, the current student enrolment stands at more than 32,000 at all levels of study,” said Adnan, who is a former USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Students Development Affairs and Alumni.

He added that the 50th anniversary celebration will run throughout the year, with most of the activities taking part in August and September.

“Aside from special performances, events and issuance of limited-edition souvenir items, it’s also about celebrating the alumni members.

“They will be invited to attend a ‘Mega Dinner’ as well as to ‘walk down memory lane’ at their respective Schools and Desasiswa (Students’ Residences), for them to meet friends old and new and to see the progress throughout the years,” he said.

Adnan also said that the USM agenda on sustainability is alive and flourishing. From being chosen for the APEX status in 2008 up until now, USM has been acknowledged for its drive towards sustainability.

“USM has received recognition from the United Nations for its educational programmes which fulfil the needs of Sustainable Development Goals SDG 4, and being at the No 2 spot globally.

“In Malaysia, USM is recognised as the best university in having a Global Impact, alongside being ranked No 49 in the world by Times Higher Education (THE),” he added.

“USM is therefore making big strides as it approaches its 50th year.”

Adnan summed up the interview by saying that USM is now making an impact in many areas at the global stage.

“USM, with its unique setting and academic environment, would definitely be the right choice for those who would like to pursue their higher education.”
