The USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail was one of the panel members who spoke at the Presidents’ Roundtable, talking on 'Enhancing Diversity and Inclusivity of International Education'.

“As we talk about diversity, Malaysia is a diverse country as we have a multiracial and multi-ethnic population, and we have been living together side by side since 1957,” Asma said.

“Disruptive technology is fascinating but frightening, and we are preparing students for undefined jobs in the future, so, what we teach students must consist of Un-learn, Re-learn, Co-learn and Co-create to prepare the students to be job creators and not job seekers.

“Tomorrow is about the sharing of information and trust and the end game is, we must provide the people with a balance in values, knowledge and character and that the cultivating exercise cannot be done without experiential learning,” she added during her presentation.

“In USM, we have introduced a USM Global Village, where international and local students are put in one dormitory for the purpose of integrated residency and ‘internationalisation’ at home.

“USM has also introduced the idea of ‘one passport, one student’ where local students are encouraged to do their internship overseas, while those inbound would be going for mobility and dual-degree programmes,” she concluded.

Other institution leaders who also spoke on the topic were the President of Singapore Management University, Professor Dr. Lily Kong; President of National Cheng Kung University Taiwan, Professor Dr. Huey-Jen Jenny Su; Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada Indonesia, Professor Ir.
