JOHOR BAHRU, 18 March 2019 – A team from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) defeated 55 other teams from various universities to emerge as champion of the Malaysia Industrial Mathematical Modelling Challenge 2019 (MIMMC 2019), held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) here today.

The winning team comprised of three undergraduates from the School of Educational Studies – Lok Chee Hoow (1st year, Biology major), Samuel Sim Shien Shuang (2nd year, Mathematics major) and Cheng Chung Sing (1st year, Physics major).

They were mentored by Associate Professor Dr. Teh Su Yean from the School of Mathematical Sciences, who was present to share in the joy of the victorious team.

The students walked away with RM1,000 in cash, and invaluable experiences and fond memories of working together as a team for the competition.

Organised by the UTM Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CIAM) and MYHIMS Solutions PLT, MIMMC 2019 is a group-based competition that offers experience and challenges that can enhance the participants' intellectual capacity, knowledge and skills in solving problems using mathematical modelling.

The participating teams must choose one out of the three posted questions on real-world problems and subsequently solve the selected problem using mathematical approaches and formulations within 25 days.

Five successful teams would then be shortlisted to compete at the Grand Finals to present their work in front of a panel of judges.

At MIMMC 2019, five successful teams (two from USM, one each from UKM, UNIMAS and UiTM) were shortlisted among those from UM, UPM, UTM, UUM, UMT, UTP, UTAR, UNITEN, UTHM, UIAM, IIU, APU and Southern UC.
