PENANG, 2 Sept. 2018 – The number of international students accepted into Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) for the 2018/2019 Academic Session increased by 100% from the total in the previous session.

283 international students from 36 countries would be enrolling at USM as compared to 141 students in the previous intake. The majority of them came from China (83), followed by Yemen (25), Indonesia (23) and Saudi Arabia (19).

Students coming from other countries include those from Egypt, Maldives, Canada, Brunei, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Thailand, Nigeria, Tanzania, Japan, Syria, Jordan and United Arab Emirates (UAE). The number of countries of origin has also increased to 36 from 24 previously.

The increase in the number of international student enrolment is in accordance with the internationalisation agenda of USM as the nation’s only university to be awarded the APEX (Accelerated Programme for Excellence) status since 2008.

USM has introduced two channels for student admission, one is through the Mainstream Channel and the other, the Alternative Channel for admission of students coming from Abroad (international students), Specialised (Government Staff), Cultural Talent, Sports Talent and Bottom Billion B40.

In order to strengthen the field of sports in the country, USM has also accepted 24 students who are involved in local and international sports meet, for them to continue their studies. This is an initiative by USM to nurture and develop students who have the Holistic, Entrepreneurial, Balanced, Articulate and Thinking (HEBAT) characteristics and the ability to realise the agenda and vision of the University and the country.

Among the athletes accepted into USM are the national swimmer, Hollymax Bell who represented the country in the Asian School Games Under-18, Muhammad Nukman Deresi (football) and Nur Maisarah Mohd Jamil (petanque).

Hollymax was accepted into the undergraduate Communication programme after completing his Diploma with a CGPA of 3.21, while Muhammad Nukman will pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Housing, Building and Planning after obtaining a 3.52 CGPA in his Matriculation studies. Nur Maisarah will pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Meanwhile, USM is also giving attention to the University Social Responsibility (USR) agenda, where the University continues to admit students from the less-privileged Bottom Billion community, to provide them with the opportunity for further studies at USM. 106 have been selected from the community, after fulfilling the academic requirements and socio-economic criteria set by USM.

USM at the same time is also providing places for people with physical challenges (OKU) for them to continue their studies and to realise their dreams of getting a degree.

Currently USM is the only public university in Malaysia to offer an off-shore programme, available abroad in India through the USM-KLE International Medical Programme, in collaboration with the Karnataka-Lingayat Education Society (KLES) in Belgaum, India. Students for this programme will undergo the ‘Siswa Lestari’ Orientation Week at the USM Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan for 5 days, following which they would be flying off to the USM-KLE Campus at Belgaum, India for their studies for the next five years.

USM continues to accept students through another off-shore programme for 2018, as an academic collaboration with Politeknik Port Dickson (PPD), via the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) for the BSc. in Architecture (Housing, Building and Planning) (Honours). Students would join the ‘Siswa Lestari’ Orientation Week at the USM Main Campus for 5 days, and then would undergo their studies for the USM Degree programme at Politeknik Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan for three years.

In total, 4,615 candidates with STPM/Matriculations/Foundation/Diploma/Similar qualifications have been offered places to continue their studies at the three USM Campuses for the Bachelor’s Degree Programme (Full-Time) for this academic session. Breakdown of the number of students is: Main Campus - 3,221 students, Engineering Campus - 768 students and Health Campus - 626 students.
