USM, PENANG, June 2017 - Ten Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) undergraduates from low-income families will receive scholarships to pursue their studies in the university, thanks to Yusuf Taiyoob Sdn. Bhd. (Yuta), a leading international exporter & importer of dried fruits, nuts and dates, based in Penang.
Its Executive Chairman and Managing Director, Dato’ Seri Yusuf Taiyoob said the scholarships amounting to RM400,000 would be given to 10 selected undergraduates to help finance their studies and life in the campus.
“I hope that with this financial aid, it will help to ease the burden of the recipients, so that they can focus and excel in their studies throughout the four years, and upon graduation help to raise their families’ socio-economic status,” he said when met at the USM’s annual buka puasa programme held at its Al-Malik Khalid Mosque here recently.
On hand to receive the mock cheque from Yusuf was USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail, witnessed by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang TYT Tun Dato’ Seri Utama (Dr.) Haji Abdul Rahman Haji Abbas.
More than 2,000 staff and students including its international students joined the USM top management and several invited guests in breaking fast together.
Also present were Abdul Rahman’s wife Toh Puan Dato’ Seri Utama Hajah Majimor Shariff; USM Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato' Dr. M. Jegathesan and wife; USM Board of Governors Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Zulkefli A. Hassan and wife; Asma’s husband, Professor Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Zakaria, and USM’s Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
