USM, PENANG, 11 January 2017 - The Asia Leadership Conference (ALC) 2017 continued its programme with the Senior Leadership and Industry Player Roundtable Session at the USM Dewan Persidangan Universiti (DPU) attended by the USM Heads of Departments.

The USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Professor Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal and USM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Development Affairs and Alumni), Professor Dato' Dr. Adnan Hussein also attended the discussion.

According to the Asia Leadership Trekker from India, Jasdeep Randhawa during her talk entitled "Urbanization in Asia - Trends, Challenges and Opportunities" presented in this session, Malaysia is one of the fastest-growing urbanization systems in Asia.

"However, there are challenges to be faced for this urbanization process to be achieved in Asia which are having high levels of inequality and poverty."

"Meanwhile, the transformative power of urbanization and opportunities need to be focused on the quality of education, medical services, access to infrastructure and other services," said the Harvard Kennedy School scholar.

She added further, in order to become a sustainable urbanised nation, we should put emphasis on sustainable development elements which consist of the people, the planet, prosperity, partnership and peace.

One element of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) consists of sustainable cities and communities, which is goal number 11 (out of 17 SDGs).
