USM MEDICAL LECTURER THE FIRST MALAYSIAN TO WIN REIMAGINE EDUCATION TEACHING DELIVERY AWARD

KUBANG KERIAN, 13 December 2016 - A medical lecturer from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has created history when he became the first Malaysian to win the world’s most prestigious award in education, the Reimagine Education Teaching Delivery Award, which was announced on 6 December 2016 in Philadelphia, United States.

Dr. Muhamad Saiful Bahri Yusoff, 35, from the Department of Medical Education, School of Medical Sciences, Health Campus USM, was shortlisted for his work on developing a programme known as DEAL-based practice for preventing burnout and promoting resilience in medical students.

According to Dr. Saiful, the programme was developed based on three established educational theories and five stress models, and its effectiveness has been tested in randomised controlled trial.

“Since 2012, this programme has been used by educators and students from 14 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia,” he said.

The Reimagine Education Award received more than 700 innovation submissions, and out of that, 120 innovations were shortlisted under 14 categories.

He added that this project has been shortlisted under the “Teaching Delivery” category together with 19 innovations from Monash University, McMaster University, John Hopkins University, Maastricht University, Nanyang Technology University and many more.

“The list recognises the innovative education pedagogies enhancing learning and employability, where all projects underwent several stages of rigorous judging process involving more than 40 international judges; among them were postgraduate students, educationists, academicians, deans, journalists, directors and CEOs of renowned companies such as Google, Microsoft, IBM, Coursera and Harvard Innovation Lab,” Dr. Saiful explained further.

Meanwhile, two other Malaysian lecturers were also shortlisted for the award. Professor Dr. Zuraidah Mohd Don from Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, University Malaya was shortlisted under the “Nurturing Employability” category; and Dr. Siti Nurma Hanim Hadie from the Anatomy Department, School of Medical Sciences, Health Campus USM was shortlisted under the “Teaching Delivery” category.

The Reimagine Education Teaching Delivery Award is an annual recognition to educational innovators initiated by QS World University ranking in collaboration with the Wharton School University of Pennsylvania.
