P3NEURO RECOGNISED AS A WORLD FEDERATION OF NEUROSURGICAL SOCIETIES TRAINING CENTRE

PENANG, 2 December 2016 - Centre for Neuroscience Services and Research (P3Neuro) and the Neuroscience Department of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) uses high-end technology in its endeavour to improve health care, while teaching advanced medical sciences to its specialists-in-training in the field of clinical neurosciences.

Advanced management of severe intracranial hypertension includes the measurement of brain temperature, brain tissue oxygen, intracranial pressure and management by intravascular hypothermia and barbiturates.

This was announced by the Director, Centre for Neuroscience Services and Research, Professor Dato' Dr. Jafri Malin Abdullah, who also mentioned that they have been recognised as a World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies training centre. HUSM functions as a tertiary and teaching Hospital, housing 1,000 beds and having all major medical and surgical specialties, working together with the Centre for Neuroscience Services and Research (P3Neuro), as well as the USM School of Medical Sciences.

The main catchment area of HUSM encompasses 3.5 states, with an estimated population of about 4,750,770 persons and this hospital also receives patients with specialised care requirements from all over the country.

P3Neuro and the clinical Department of Neurosciences has a workload of approximately 2,500 inpatients per year and 7,000 outpatients per year, with a wide spectrum of neurosurgical illnesses.

The establishment of the P3Neuro was mooted by the previous Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia and it was established by the Minister’s and Ministry’s decree on 16th December 2011 and has been in existence officially from 1st April 2013 under the Vice-Chancellor’s purview.

The centre offers services in general neurosurgery as well as neurooncology, vascular neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery and pediatric neurosurgery.

The Centre for P3Neuro is also pleased to announce the provision of two fellowships per annum for young neurosurgeons from underprivileged developing countries.
