UNIVERSITAS MALIKUSSALEH DELEGATION VISIT STRENGTHENS TIES WITH USM

PENANG, 29 September 2015 – The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Professor Dato' Dr. Ahmad Shukri Mustapa Kamal today received a courtesy visit from the delegates of Universitas Malikussaleh Aceh, Indonesia (UNIMAL), led by its Rector, Professor Dr. Apridar at the USM Chancellory Conference Room.

Ahmad Shukri said, he was truly delighted in welcoming the 13-member delegate in their plan to establish joint relations and in discussing various issues pertaining to research collaborations and knowledge-sharing between USM and UNIMAL.

"I hope that with this visit, relations between our two countries would be strengthened and would lead to more research collaborations initiated in the near future," said Shukri in his welcoming speech at the meeting and dialogue session held between both parties.

Shukri added that USM is ready to sign memorandums of understanding for collaborations in various aspects, especially in areas of research and lifelong learning for the lecturers from UNIMAL.

"The recent Convocation at USM saw the graduation of 12 doctoral candidates, who are lecturers from Universitas International Batam (UIB) Indonesia via the USM postgraduate Ph.D collaboration programme conducted for university lecturers. Similarly USM welcomes the lecturers from UNIMAL to pursue their higher studies especially at the Ph.D level, so that more lecturers can attain higher levels of education for the benefit of the university and the country," he added.

In his reply, Apridar hoped that the cooperation established from the visit would facilitate the sharing of knowledge and undertaking of collaborations for both UNIMAL and USM in various research areas.

“The main objective of the visit by the UNIMAL delegation this time was a follow-up to their previous visit in May to share ideas and opinions, as well as looking at potential relations which can be established, especially in the field of engineering between the two universities. We are aware of the fact that USM is a well-renowned research university in Malaysia and the fields of research are of international standards.

“Therefore, we hope that this visit would also help to establish various research cooperation with universities in the Asian region besides USM, which is well-known as a leading institution,’’ he said.

Apridar truly welcomed the proposal made by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) USM to conduct a doctoral degree programme for the lecturers from UNIMAL.

UNIMAL is a public university supported by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia, which was established in the same year as USM that was in 1969.

The dialogue session also saw the attendance of the Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Dr. Zaidi Mohd Ripin and the Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering, Professor Dr. Azlina Harun @ Kamaruddin.
