USM CONTINUES TO ENHANCE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS THROUGH COLLABORATION

PENANG, June 2015 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) will continue to enhance its global competitiveness by collaborating with renowned universities and institutions around the world either through research partnerships or offering of joint degrees.

USM Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato' Dr. Omar Osman said, these efforts are important to ensure that the resources invested by the university will bring forth benefits to all students including international students, lecturers and researchers.

When asked to comment on USM’s improved ranking in the QS University Rankings Asia 2015, Omar said that this was the result of concerted efforts of the lecturers and students who have contributed greatly in ensuring the continuous improvement of the university’s position and reputation in the world.

"USM has always strive to produce top-notch graduates who not only excel in their academic study but also making significant contributions to the society, as well as quality lecturers and researchers who produce highly-cited scientific literature.

“USM will also continue to focus on elevating its name internationally by further strengthening its strong subject areas such as Environmental Sciences and Engineering and at the same time try to improve on other core subjects of USM," said Omar.

USM rose to 49th place (from 57th) in the latest QS Asian Ranking and was ranked second among the local universities. USM has also shown improvement in all indicators given compared to previous years.

"What is important is for USM to make continuous effort in driving excellence and constantly look for new collaboration opportunities with various parties around the world in offering academic programmes together including double degree programmes, and encouraging lecturers and researchers to produce more high quality research papers that will benefit the community, nation and the world," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor added, USM will intensify its efforts in developing the ability and capability of both local and international students so that they are well received in various employment sectors locally or internationally. - Translation: Tan Ewe Hoe/Text: Mohamad Abdullah
